About the work

Jesse Wine has created Me Orbit, 2021 especially for Whitechapel Gallery to accompany the exhibition Eileen Agar: Angel of Anarchy, 19 May – 29 Aug 2021.

Me orbit is a distilled still life: a black deflated ball signifies the halting of play or the inevitable end of childhood. The ball is adorned with a snail; the outside world slowly encroaching, much like the ticking hands of time, inevitable and unstoppable.

The title itself is a colloquially British sentence construction, locating this strange sculpture in time and place..What is or has been in my orbit? What do I choose to be there and what is there by cultural proximity, what is there by organic proximity? Where do these ideas meet and what does it look like — this?

About the artist

Jesse Wine, B. Chester, UK 1983, Lives & works in New York, works primarily with ceramics. Wine’s sculpture reflects on his medium's primary alliance with craft and its sometimes secondary standing within the visual arts. His sculptures reflect a deep engagement with the process of making, and an experimental approach to traditional methods. Tableau-like scenes often with exaggerated everyday objects realised in clay, explore process, form and display.
